Geoscience Australia

One of the Southern Hemisphere's largest ground source heat pump systems

Geoscience Australia is home to one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest geoexchange system. Where a conventional air conditioning systems uses the varying temperatures of ambient air, a geoexchange system uses the constant temperature of the Earth to provide highly efficient air conditioning. The geoexchange system consists of a Ground Heat Exchanger (GHX) and Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs). The GHX accesses these constant ground temperatures by circulating water through the 350 boreholes that are located beneath the visitor car park. The GSHPs then utilise this circulating water as heat source (heating) or heat sink (cooling) to air condition their space.
